2026 THEME:  Beyond the Binary

In an increasingly polarised world, we are conditioned to think in opposites: right or wrong, tradition or progress, human or machine, justice or mercy. Yet the most pressing challenges of our time refuse to fit neatly into these categories. Beyond the Binary is a call to move past rigid either/or thinking and explore the complex, interconnected spaces where real understanding and innovation emerge

TEDxUJ 2026 will showcase ideas that challenge false dichotomies, invite nuance, and propose integrative ways of thinking across  law, technology, identity, economics, governance, and culture.
By amplifying voices that sit at the intersections rather than the extremes this theme positions the University of Johannesburg as a platform for bold, interdisciplinary thought that reflects the realities of Africa and a rapidly evolving global society.

Because the world isn’t either/or anymore and neither are the solutions it demands.

What is TED

Established in 1984, TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. Three broad subject areas that collectively shape our future.

The event is still wider, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. The diverse audience CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists. But TED is about much more than famous names. It is about passion, laughter, beauty, ingenuity, and ideas capable of changing the world.
